Six Mile, Daughters of the American Revolution Recognize Constitution Week

Roy Stoddard, Mayor of Six Mile, knew just what to do when six women from the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) strode into the Town Council Meeting on August 3rd. Forewarned, he hoisted the 1910 cast iron city seal to the middle of the table.

Anne Kilpatrick, Vice Regent of the Fort Prince George Chapter, presented a proclamation that declared September 17-23 be observed to honor the United States Constitution. The Proclamation was read by Rita Martin, the Town Clerk/Treasurer, and unanimously approved by the members of the Six Mile Town Council.

The tradition of celebrating Constitution Week was begun by the DAR In 1955 when they petitioned Congress to set aside September 17-23 annually to be dedicated for the observance of the Constitution. The resolution was later adopted by the U.S. Congress and signed into Public Law No. 915, on August 2, 1956, by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The purpose of constitution week is to encourage the community to study, protect and defend the constitution.

After placing the City of Six Mile’s official seal on the Proclamation, Mayor Stoddard further stated that “Six Mile’s observance of Constitution Week will also be officially noted on the electronic sign outside the Town Hall.”

Known as the largest women’s patriotic organization in the world, DAR has over 175,000 members with approximately 3,000 chapters in all 50 states and 13 foreign countries. South Carolina has 4,371 members in 71 chapters across the state.
