Business Owner Charged in Connection with Clemson Student's Drowning

DNR official says business owner gave student a life jacket that did not fit.

An Upstate business owner has been charged in connection with the drowning death of a Clemson University student in March.

Captain Robert McCullough with the SC Department of Natural Resources told WYFF that Charlie Michael is charged with duty of boat livery. McCullough said Michael, the owner of Jocassee Outdoor Center, gave the wrong size life jacket to Anlin Wang.

Wang, 25, and his wife were kayaking on Lake Jocassee on March 16 when their kayak capsized. The couple was separated soon after entering the water. Both were wearing life jackets, but Anlin Wang could not swim.

Wang's wife was forced to swim for more than an hour to reach shore after the accident, and it took several more hours before she was able to flag down other boaters for help.

Wang's body was recovered the next day and his death was ruled a freshwater drowning.
