Clemson, UGA To Open Season In Primetime Slot

Georgia and Clemson, both expected to be ranked in the top 10 in the country, will face off on in a nationally televised primetime game.

The Clemson-UGA game in 2013 will take on the look and feel of some of the epic showdowns of the 1980's, when both programs were perennial powers.  The game time was announced Tuesday for Clemson's Aug. 31 season opener against the University of Georgia, and it has all the makings for a frenzied environment in Death Valley. Kickoff is scheduled at 8 p.m. at Memorial Stadium for the game, which will be televised by ABC, multiple media outlets, including TigerIllustrated report. Both teams will come into 2013 with aspirations for a national title run, and will likely be preseason ranked in the top 10 in the nation. After winning 12 games a year ago, Georgia finished the 2012 season ranked No. 4 in the nation, and Clemson, finishing with 11 …

Wow... tough call. As a Gamecock alum and fan, these are the two teams I loathe the most. But since we play UGA the following week, I'm going to have to pull for the Bulldogs. I don't relish facing Georgia on their home turf after a season opening loss. That said, I believe Clemson can and probably will win this game.   more ›

Gamecock Girls Analyze Blown Bowl Game Call

A 3-year-old and a 6-year-old girl gave their take on a controversial call in a video that has gone viral.

A key call in the Outback Bowl that Gamecock fans say was missed by referees was so obvious, a 3-year-old could see it.  Jason Foster of Spartanburg posted a video of his daughters' take on the controversial call on Youtube that has since gone viral, according to FoxCarolina.com.   His daughters, Ada, 3, and Logan, 6, were recorded explaining how the referees seemingly blew a call that could have been crucial - after a Michigan player was desperately reaching for a first down, an already generous spot clearly did not push the ball to the chains. But the officiating crew gave the Wolverines a first down, despite video clearly showing the ball was inches short of the marker.  "The referee says it's touching that pole, but it's really not," …

High Tension, High Stakes In Saturday's Clemson - Carolina Game

No. 11 Clemson hosts No. 12 South Carolina in a monster matchup of two teams with big goals.

Saturday's game between the No. 11 Clemson Tigers and No. 12 South Carolina Gamecocks has all the makings of a blockbuster event.  It's the highest the two teams have been ranked heading into the rivalry matchup since the 1987 game at Williams-Brice Stadium, when Clemson was in the top 10 and Carolina was ranked No. 12. For the Gamecocks, Saturday represents the first opportunity to win a fourth game in a row over their hated rivals since 1951 to 1954, and an opportunity wrap up its second 10-win season in a row.  For the Tigers, the game is a shot at redemption after getting run out of the stadium the last three years by the Gamecocks. It also represents a chance for the Tigers to earn an at-large bid to a BCS bowl, most likely the Sugar…

Brian Novak McCracken of Anderson, S.C., and Rachel Marie Woodlee of Greer, S.C., are both student-athletes at Wofford – McCracken is a member of the varsity track and field team while Woodlee is a volleyball player. Wofford also had a Rhodes Scholar finalist in 2011 in Joseph Hiram McAbee of Woodruff, S.C. McCracken and Woodlee are among the dozen finalists selected in District 12 for the scholarship selection, which encompasses South Carolina, Arkansas, Kansas, Mississippi and Missouri. They are competing …

Clemson-Carolina Game Now Has Kickoff Time

The Clemson Tigers will host the Carolina Gamecocks at night in Death Valley.

The annual rivalry game between the South Carolina Gamecocks and Clemson Tigers will be held at night two weeks from now, ensuring a raucous environment in Death Valley for the regular season finale.  The big game is set for a 7 p.m. kickoff on Nov. 24 at Memorial Stadium, and will be televised nationally on either ESPN or ESPN2.  Clemson will be trying to break a three-game winning streak the Gamecocks hold over the Tigers, as Carolina handed them lopsided defeats in 2009, 2010 and 2011. Carolina hasn't defeated Clemson four years in a row since they rattled off four straight in 1951, 1952, 1953 and 1954.  Clemson leads the all-time series 65-40-4.  Other televised rivalry games of note on Nov. 24 include:  - Georgia Tech at Georgia, noon…

Clemson's Dabo Swinney, USC's Steve Spurrier Trade Barbs

Dabo Swinney responds to the Old Ball Coach's jabs about the Tigers' stadium.

Clemson football coach Dabo Swinney responded Wednesday with jabs of his own after University of South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier knocked the Tigers' stadium, WYFF reports.  Spurrier, speaking at a press conference about his team's matchup with LSU on Saturday, took aim at Clemson's Memorial Stadium, which shares the nickname "Death Valley" with LSU.  "Most of our guys have never been to Death Valley," Spurrier said Tuesday. "That is the Death Valley, isn't it? Or is there another one? There's two of them. That's right there's two Death Valleys. Was LSU the first one or the second one? They were first? Oh, okay."  Swinney responded Wednesday night after the Tigers practiced.  "It's amazing people are interested in Clemson so much, but …

As far as the Carolina/Clemson rivalry (or any other sports/collegiate rivalry) goes those are both pretty lame insults. No sir, nobody won, we all lose. I understand that they're the coaches of the programs speaking for publication and broadcast and can't let off with the type of expletive laden verbal tirades bandied about tailgate parties, but that really felt like they were both just phoning …   more ›

Are The Tigers Tough To Root For?

While answering fans' questions, sports television personality Kirk Herbstreit called the Clemson Tigers the toughest team to root for in college football.

It's a problem many college football fans probably complain about - your team, it seems, always drops the big game.  Clemson has certainly had its share of forgettable football moments after building up high expectations. In 2006, a 6-1 start was squandered as Clemson dropped three of its last four. In 2008, a pre-season No. 9 Clemson team was expected to be the cream of the crop in the ACC, but a season-opening walloping at the hands of Alabama proved portentous of the rest of a year that included the firing of Tommy Bowden. And how about last year's Orange Bowl, the first BCS game the Tigers ever played in? West Virginia just scored again.  We don't mean to pile on - we're merely testing the theory ESPN personality Kirk Herbstreit …

Poll: How Successful Was Terry Don Phillips At Clemson?

Terry Don Phillips announced Thursday that he will retire next year. How will his decade-long tenure be remembered?

Terry Don Phillips, who has served as the athletic director at Clemson University since 2002, announced Thursday that he will retire after his contract expires in 2013.  Clemson President James Barker said a national search for Phillips' successor will begin this fall.  Clemson is a better university because of Terry Don Phillips," Barker said. "His integrity, dedication and business insights have made Clemson's athletics programs stronger financially, academically and competitively. Under his leadership, I believe Clemson has established a model athletics program -- one that is characterized by full compliance, success on the field of competition, and recognition that student-athletes are students first. I have asked Terry Don to continue…
