CHARLESTON — Texas Gov. Rick Perry didn’t surprise many folks on Saturday when he officially declared his candidacy for president, but his entry may have a huge impact on a field of candidates often panned for lacking appeal. “He’s got to be the front runner, or very soon he will be,” said Howard Chalmers, a Mount Pleasant Republican. “His timbre is completely different than what we’ve been hearing from the president. CHARLESTON — Gov. Nikki Haley called Texas Gov. Rick Perry a "superstar" at the RedState Gathering being held today at Francis Marion Hotel downtown. Texas governor expected to launch presidential campaign in Saturday speech.
Charleston will play a major role in the next chapter of the 2012 GOP Presidential Primary. Texas Gov. Rick Perry is expected to take the stage there this weekend and make it clear that he's running for president. The governor was expected to be a big draw for this weekend's RedState conference as he contemplated a possible campaign. Now, website Politico is reporting that Perry's speech to the crowd will be, at least, a soft launch for a run. Following that, the governor is expected to jet off to New Hampshire, another important early primary state.
