Despite Primary Loss, SC in Mitt's Corner

South Carolina expected to continue to stay red.

Mitt Romney and South Carolina voters have never been a very good match. Whether it is the former Massachusetts governor’s religion or his lack of consistency on issues that matter to the Palmetto State’s overwhelmingly conservative electorate, Romney just hasn’t aroused much passion. He finished a distant fourth in the 2008 South Carolina Primary with 15 percent of the vote. This year, as the presumptive GOP nominee and with the support of Gov. Nikki Haley and State Treasurer Curtis Loftis, Romney finished 12 percentage points behind Newt Gingrich. Such apathy towards Romney gave Democrats hope that maybe South Carolina could be winnable after all. A poll in December confirmed as much. Last month, Karl Rove said that the state is up for …

Really? Sounds like you and "everyone you know" had an extremely tough run of luck, maybe it's you? Most people are pretty much on the same trajectory as they were 6 years ago. And by "most" I mean a significant majority in numbers, you know, the definition of most. Also, at least here in the greater Charleston area there really aren't all that many democrats to vote out. But whatever you do don'…   more ›

Romney's Troubles Now Extend to More Than Just Explaining Bain

He may survive questions in the primary, but could they come back to haunt him in a race against Obama?

The road to the nomination for president in either of the major parties is never without its bumps. But after the past week, frontrunner Mitt Romney may want to buy some extra-resilient shock absorbers. Romney and South Carolina have never been a particularly good match. Romney isn’t southern, isn’t Baptist and doesn’t have a military background. Before votes were cast in Iowa and New Hampshire, his team in South Carolina conceded privately they would be happy with a solid showing here and did not need to win. Then Romney won the first two states and there was talk that South Carolina would be where he could clinch the nomination. The momentum was reflected in the polls, which showed Romney with a double-digit lead over his closest …

Romney gave a speech at the Citadel. In it he promised an "American Century." Why do we need an American Century? It's the same old GW Bush militarism, interventionism, pandering to the Pentagon generals and enormous defense budgets we don't need. Al Quaeda shot it's wad with 9/11 and hasn't mustered anything since. It put all it's resources into 9/11. Now it's reduced to enlisting one poor, …   more ›

Are Independent SC Tea Partiers Missing Opportunity?

The state's 100 or so independent tea party organizations can't agree on a GOP candidate — and don't want to be told what to do.

The list of electoral victories the Tea Party has scored is lengthy, with some of its biggest triumphs coming right here in South Carolina. All four freshmen congressmen received strong Tea Party backing in 2010, as did Gov. Nikki Haley. Not to mention Sen. Jim DeMint, who is nationally recognized as the Tea Party’s patriarch. This weekend the state Tea Party has its annual convention at Myrtle Beach. Not coincidentally, the GOP has also descended on the state in advance of the Jan. 21 primary. As Katon Dawson, Gov. Rick Perry’s chair in South Carolina, said: “Everybody wants the Tea Party vote.” Dawson knows something about getting that vote. He was the state GOP leader when the Tea Party rose to prominence two years ago. South Carolina …

Romney Schedules Greenville Visit For Friday

Arrives shortly after state GOP chair questions his commitment to the state

On Tuesday a story in the National Journal quoted South Carolina Republican Party Chairman Chad Connelly as being dubious about Mitt Romney’s commitment to the Palmetto State. A day later, the former Massachusetts Governor’s campaign announced he’ll be appearing at Boiling Springs Fire Station on 208 Blacks Drive in Greenville. Having fallen well behind Newt Gingrich in polls in three of the first four voting states, Romney has stepped up the attacks on the former Speaker of the House, referencing his Tiffany’s expense account, among other things yesterday. After months without doing so, Romney has made himself available to the media in the last week, a move that comes on the heels of criticism from outlets such as Fox News. The event …

Romney to Meet Veterans Today in Mauldin

Fourth visit to SC, first in the Upstate in six months

Who: Mitt Romney, One of the Republican frontrunners for President Where: Mutt’s BBQ on 214 E. Butler Road in Mauldin When: 12:45 p.m. Where to Follow: On Twitter @MauldinPatch Although he has not campaigned in the Upstate in nearly six months and only been in the state three times, Mitt Romney has not been far from South Carolina voters’ minds. But that’s not necessarily a good thing. By now, the criticisms of the former Massachusetts governor are familiar — he’s a practicing Mormon and he’s prone to being, one might say, flexible, on some issues that are at the core of conservative doctrine. Romney’s strengths are equally known — he can raise money and he’s electable. While Romney’s positions on some issues might have changed, his …

Campaign Director: Romney Coming To S.C. In Next Seven Days

Ann Romney, wife of GOP candidate, visits Spartanburg

Ann Romney spoke to a small group of supporter Thursday morning in Spartanburg, but her visit is likely to be but a prelude to a visit by her husband, one of the GOP frontrunners, Mitt Romney, within the next seven days. After she spoke, David Raad, Romney's campaign director for the state of South Carolina, confirmed the candidate would himself be heading to the Palmetto State soon. "Without a doubt, unequivocally yes, he's coming here," Raad said. "Within the next seven days." When pressed about when Romney may visit the Upstate, Raad said such a visit would likely be "shortly after that," suggesting that his initial visit to the state will be in the Midlands or Lowcountry. Ann Romney, a 62-year-old mother of five, visited the Westside …

Candidate Profile: Romney Ready to Get Reacquainted with S.C.

Ann Romney has three stops scheduled in the state

Note: This article is written to coincide with the scheduled visits to South Carolina of Ann Romney, wife of GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney. Mrs. Romney's itinerary is at the end of this article. If Mitt Romney ends up being the Republican nominee for president, he will have earned it. In the spring, when he officially declared that he was running for president, Romney was immediately installed as the presumptive nominee. But dating back to his 2008 candidacy, Romney has never been the preferred choice of the more conservative wing of the party. He has been criticized for the universal health plan he instituted while governor of Massachusetts and has been criticized as a flip-flopper on issues that are dear to many conservatives. …

Anything goes to make a dollar is NOT Capitalism. Under your strict definition drug dealers are Capitalists like Mitt Romney. The drug dealer or corporate raider are both wrong. Gov. Perry and Newt Gingrich have a right and obligation to attack these forms of Capitalism. The business venture was three separate parameters is it moral, ethical, or legal. The drug dealer is immoral and illegal. Mitt …   more ›
