The former House Speaker gets a nod from several in the crowd, but race remains Mitt Romney's to lose, many admit.
The winner of Monday night's GOP presidential debate is open for debate itself, but if a sampling of crowd reaction afterwards is any indication, Texas Rep. Ron Paul took a step backward with South Carolina voters. The big issue was Paul's foreign policy, several said. Indeed, some of the biggest boos of the night were reserved for Paul when his stances on military and defense matters failed to be hawkish and interventionist enough for the crowd at Monday night's Fox News/Wall Street Journal/SCGOP debate in Myrtle Beach. Candidates explain their stances on faith-related issues before the GOP debate.
Approximately 1,000 voters gathered in a heated tent across the street from the South Carolina Convention Center to hear GOP Candidates address faith and politics before the start of Monday night’s debate. One by one, candidates and their supporters took to the stage during a Faith and Freedom Coalition rally to address voters on issues of faith. Faith is an issue that will play an important role with many conservative voters, especially Mitt Romney who could face some difficulty capturing the evangelical Christian vote. The candidates took the opportunity to make their stance on issues like abortion and gay marriage known. SCGOP Chairman Chad Connelly officially announced Wednesday that state's Republican Party will hold a presidential debate at Wofford College next month. The debate, which will be held at the Benjamin Johnson Arena on Wofford's campus on Nov. 12, will begin at 8 p.m., and will be moderated by CBS News Anchor Scott Pelley and Major Garrett of the National Journal. Connelly said Wednesday that he anticipated all of the Republican candidates would participate, though he gave no indication as to whether or not he'd recieved official confirmation from any of them.
