Only three counties saw unemployment numbers drop last month, but growth seen in several sectors
The state's unemployment rate has risen to 8.4 percent. The Department of Employment and Workforce released December job numbers Friday and the figure show that the number of jobless in South Carolina has gone up for the first time in four months. The increase was slight from 8.3 percent in November and shows improvement from December 2011, when the state unemployment rate was 9.6 percent. Throughout December 2012, the number of employed increased by 5,325 to 1,969560. The number of unemployed grew since November by 3,211 to 180,032 in December, and the labor force expanded by 8,536 to 2,149,592. The state unemployment agency's website, which was defaced this weekend, is back online after an image appeared on the home page stating the site had been hacked.
The website for the state's Department of Employment and Workforce is now back online after the site's home page was changed by a "malicious user." The state unemployment agency's website, http://dew.sc.gov/, was taken offline Saturday night to remove what officials said was a "defacement." A website defacement is an attack on a website that changes the visual appearance of the site or a web page. WLTX first reported the department was investigating the incident. Authorities said no personal information was compromised in the attack. WLTX reported that an image on the Department of Employment and Workforce's website said the site had been hacked Saturday evening. Greenville County had the state's second-lowest jobless rate in August.
Greenville County saw its unemployment rate dip in August, the state's Department of Employment and Workforce reported Friday. The county's jobless dropped slightly to 7.6 percent, from 7.9 percent in July, DEW reported. That's the second-lowest jobless rate in the state. Overall, the state's jobless rate was pegged at 9.6 percent, from 9.7 percent in July. Yet again, Lexington County had the state's lowest jobless rate in August, at 7.2 percent. Marion County, in the state's Pee Dee region, had the highest, at 17.3 percent. Greenville and Lexington and a handful of other counties were among the bright spots in DEW's report. Employment growth, workforce training cited as contributors of the lower rate.
The state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate experienced a significant drop, from a revised estimate of 10.9 percent in September to 10.5 percent in October. Fewer job-seekers during the month coupled with stronger employment growth led to the first September to October decline in the rate in five years, according to a Tuesday release from the state Department of Employment and Workforce. Workforce training was also cited. A gain of 10,066 from September to October brought the total number of employed South Carolinians to 1,941,778. The number of unemployed people declined over the month by 9,611, making the total unemployed count fall to 227,719.
