English Professor's "Second Act" Leads to Med School

  By Lisa Garrett For 15 years, David Roper stood in front of the classroom, teaching high school students about English literature, writing and history. Most afternoons were spent mentoring and coaching student athletes. These days he’s still in the classroom, not in front lecturing, but sitting alongside other Tri-County Technical College biology and chemistry students, many of them working adults like himself, seeking new careers in the second act of their lives. Roper says he hadn’t thought about biology since he was an 18-year-old college student. Prayer Vigil For Simpson Family This Afternoon

Local churches will lead vigil in Dacusville Elementary School parking lot

The Dacusvillle community is still in shock after the murders of two area children Tuesday. Suzanna Brown Simpson is charged with the murders of her daughter, Carly Simpson, 7 and her son, Sawyer Simpson, 5, and the attempted murder of her husband Michael Simpson A prayer vigil for the Simpson family, led by local churches, will be held at 5:30pm today in the parking lot of Dacusville Elementary School. The school is just a short distance from the Cherokee Trail home where Carly, Sawyer and their father were found Tuesday. Both children attended Dacusville Elementary School. Counselors were onhand at the school Wednesday to assist students, faculty and staff with their grief. Michael Simpson remains in the hospital, with life-threatening …

Bank of America Donates to Tri-County Technical College

Donation will help students in the Connect to College program

  Bank of America Charitable Foundation made a $3,000 donation to Tri-County Technical College’s Connect to College program. The funds are designated for textbooks for students in the program that serves high school dropouts age 17 – 20 who meet specific eligibility criteria and live in Anderson, Oconee, and Pickens counties. Using a dual credit model, students earn both high school and college credit, and may simultaneously complete both the high school diploma (meeting all requirements of the South Carolina Department of Education) and a postsecondary credential. Southern Wesleyan University Celebrates Class of 2013

More than 300 graduates now beginning next chapter of their lives.

More than 300 graduates received their associate, bachelor’s and master’s degrees during three ceremonies at Southern Wesleyan University in Central. Each ceremony began with a processional along Wesleyan Drive, as students, anticipating their new degrees, were led by the City of Greenville Pipes and Drums, playing “Scotland the Brave.” The musical aspect of this celebration continued inside with inspirational music from the University Singers. “The heart of the university’s mission and purpose is most evidenced through the teaching and mentoring the students receive from our faculty,” said Todd Voss, university president, in his opening remarks. “The scholarship and commitment of our faculty to their students and their faith in Christ in …

New Easley Charter School Proposed

Middle school is one of 19 new charter schools proposed statewide.

A group of Easley parents and teachers have applied to the state to start a new charter school serving middle-schoolers, according to an announcement from the SC Department of Education. The new school would set its sights on improving the graduation rate, catching students up academically and educating them about careers, nutrition and fitness, according to a Greenville News report. The new school, which would be named Intense Charter School, would serve grades 5-7 and eventually grades 5-8, planning committee chairwoman Betty Roe told the paper. “It is for students who have average to above average intelligence but for whatever reason they have fallen behind in school,” said Roe, a teacher at Gettys Middle School. Clemson University Offers Dozens of Summer Camps

Looking for a camp to send the kids this summer? Clemson has a huge range of options to choose from.

Clemson University has released its list of summer camps, and its a doozy. The university will be offering at least 36 different camps, many of them on campus, but also at sites throughout the Upstate and the rest of South Carolina. The camps, for children through high-schoolers, include a multitude of sports camps, camps aimed at the outdoors, and, of course, academic camps.   Deborah Brock, medical laboratory technology instructor and faculty liaison for professional development at Tri-County Technical College, was honored May 10 with the highest award presented to the faculty. She received the Presidential Medallion for Instructional Excellence at the College's spring commencement. Dr. Ronnie L. Booth, president, presented the medallion to the Anderson resident. The medallion is presented each year to the instructor who has contributed the most during the academic year to the profession of teaching, to the development of the College and to the students.
