Letter: If You Give a Student Common Core Standards

Letter's author concerned about Common Core Standards

If you give a student common core standards, he's going to ask to read a great classic fiction book which inspires his imagination.

When you tell him he's already spent his 25% amount of time on great literature he must read cold non classical texts, he'll probably ask you why he has to do this.

When you explain he must be college and career ready to read instruction manuals on how to work on the assembly line, he'll ask you why do I have to work that kind of job...

When you tell him because Bill Gates has spent over 200 million dollars to promote these common core standards and in order for him to be able to compete globally and get a job in a factory he must learn how to read cold instructional manuals and boring executive orders..he'll want to look outside and see if he still lives in America, the land of the free, the land where one can choose his own course in life...even if that course is not to be college and career ready.

If he sees he does still live in America, he might notice his freedom of choice is slipping away. So he'll probably ask to move to a new state who doesn't have common core standards...

When he's told all the states have common core standards in education he'll probably get depressed and cry. He might cry and get so depressed he turns to drugs and alcohol to forget that he can no longer choose his own path but be a cog in a wheel and be “common” like every other student.

He may even end up giving up hope and become homeless. When he's homeless he'll probably have to go on welfare. He'll have very little initiative to chase his original dream of starting his own business. So he'll probably just take a nap. He'll have to find a park bench and some newspapers to use for his pillow.. He'll make himself comfortable and fluff the newspapers a few times.

He'll probably ask someone passing by to read him a story.

So they'll read to him from a great classic fiction book like Tom Sawyer, and he'll ask to see the pictures.

When he looks at the pictures, he'll get so excited he'll want to read another classic book.

He'll ask you to take him to the library and help him get a library card. He'll read and read to his hearts content.

When he's finished reading all the books that inspired his imagination he'll remember what his American Dream was to begin with...start his own business...but alas he has no money...just his welfare check. So the moral of this story is never give a student common core standards ...it will destroy his American Dream of being free to choose what he wants to be!

Give a student the freedom of choice to attend a school whose standards meet his needs not Bill Gates', Obama's or progressive bureaucrats needs. Just say no to one-size-fits-all standards.

Call your SC state senator and tell him to support SC Senate Bill 0300!
