Food Fight Bowl Fundraising Deadline Approaching

Easley High and Pickens High competing to see which school can raise the most money for Pickens County Meals on Wheels.

The Sam Wyche Food Fight Bowl is approaching and supporters of the Easley Green Wave or the Pickens Blue Flame have just over a week to raise money for the cause.

The Food Fight Bowl will take place during the Green Wave's game against Pickens on August 17.

The fundraising goal for this year’s event is 8,000 meals or $40,000. Both student bodies will be raising money, and the school that raises the most money will win the coveted “Ultimate Food Fight” trophy.

Last year, each school raised $30,000 for Pickens County Meals on Wheels and the trophy was awarded to them jointly, but this year only one school will walk away with it.

The deadline for fundraising for this year's Food Fight Bowl is 3:30 pm, August 17, according to Pickens County Meals on Wheels Director Meta Bowers

“Pickens is in the lead,” Bowers said.

Bowers recently shared some good news with members of the Easley Rotary Club.

“We no longer have a waiting list,” Bowers said. “When I first started, there were over 300 people on this waiting list and now there is zero. I am very proud of that fact, but I did not do it alone. I'd like to thank you guys for supporting me, supporting Meals on Wheels, and making this happen.”

Rotary President Vicki Fletcher presented Bowers with a $330 donation from the club.

“$330 does make a difference at Meals on Wheels,” Bowers said. “$330 will purchase 66 meals for the 230 people that we serve every day.”

Meals on Wheels is not a government agency, she said.

“We do not seek or receive any state or federal funding,” Bowers said. “Over 56 percent of our contributions come from individuals, churches, church organizations, businesses and groups like the Easley Rotary, so I'd like to say thank you, thank you for this and thank you for longstanding support of Meals on Wheels.”

Fletcher urged Easley Rotarians to support the cause.

“We do not want those folks in Pickens to beat us,” she said.

To assist the students in their fundraising efforts, the Save-A-Lot store in Pickens, this year's presenting sponsor of the Food Fight Bowl, is hosting an in-store challenge until August 17. During this time, the public can support its favorite team by purchasing $1 pin-ups in support of either Pickens or Easley.

This special fundraising challenge provides an opportunity for each school to maximize its fundraising efforts during their final push leading up to the game.
