Dr. Fain Teaches Decimals

Dr. Allen Fain works with students Zander Gravely, Allyson O'Neal, and Kolby Robinson to put decimals in order from least to greatest.

Students in one of Melissa Burrell’s fifth grade math classes got a special treat in math this week—the principal came into their classroom to teach!

Dr. Fain, principal of Pickens Elementary School and former fifth grade teacher, told Mrs. Burrell that he wanted to teach a lesson that went along with the unit she was teaching on decimals.

Dr. Fain planned and executed the lesson, and even got the students up and moving with an interactive activity.

Alex Dare, a student in Mrs. Burrell’s class, explained that the activity involved assigning decimals to letters of the alphabet. Dr. Fain challenged them to calculate the “value” of their name by adding the decimals assigned to the letters. Alex adds, “It was a little hard to understand at first but once we got the hang of it, it was cool and fun!”
