American Cancer Society Recognizes Anderson District One

District had 100 percent school participation in North Anderson Relay for Life.

Anderson District One and its schools were recently recognized for their commitment to raise money for cancer research.

Amanda Seawell with the American Cancer Society and Wes Porter, event chairman for Relay for Life of North Anderson, appeared at the Anderson District One Board of Trustees' meeting Tuesday night at Powdersville High School.

“This year the Relay for Life of North Anderson had 100 percent school participation,” Seawell said. “And for that, we have an award that it given to any district that has 100 percent school participation.”

Porter presented the award to Board Chairman Fred Alexander on behalf of the district.

Each year, the American Cancer Society recognizes one of the state's 85 school district superintendent
“who bests supports the American Cancer Society and the Relay for Life in their school district,” Seawell said.

“Superintendent Dr. Wayne Fowler plays an instrumental role in championing all the schools in Anderson County School District One to be involved in Relay for Life,” Seawell said.

She said that, thanks to Fowler's encouragement, school involvement in Relay for Life grew from 64 percent in 2011 to 100 percent participation in 2012.

In 2011, Anderson District One schools raised $30,953 for the American Cancer Society

In 2012, Anderson District One schools raised $53, 826.

“On behalf of the American Cancer Society and Relay for Life, I want to personally Dr. Fowler and School District One for all of your hard work and dedication in the fight against cancer,” Seawell said. “Our volunteers provide a tremendous service to our community and we could not provide our programs and services without your help and support.”

Seawell presented Fowler with the Relay for Life South Carolina Superintendent of the Year Award.

“I don't know what to say, other than that I am superintendent of a group of real all-stars,” Fowler said. “I'm just happen to be really a part of a great team. This is not about me, this is for our schools.”
