Jeff Duncan is a graduate of Clemson University and worked in community banking for seven years. He later formed a real estate marketing firm which specialized in statewide real estate auctions. He was elected in to the South Carolina House of Representatives in 2002, where he served until running for Congress in 2010 and winning a seat with 62 percent of the vote. He was part of the first wave of “Tea Party” candidates to win federal office.

Duncan was re-elected in 2012 with 67 percent of the vote.

Since going to Washington, Duncan has focused on energy and foreign policy.

South Carolina’s 3rd Congressional District covers the Northwest portion of the state but runs along the Georgia border down to Augusta. For most of the 20th Century the 3rd District was held by Democrats. But that changed in 1995 when now-Senator Lindsey Graham won the seat. Graham was succeeded by fellow Republican Gresham Barrett when he ascended to the Senate in 2003. When Barrett retired, Duncan, who had served in the South Carolina House, ran for the seat.
