Throwing A Memorial Day Cookout?

Here are 10 things that will make your shindig the best backyard barbecue ever.

Cooking out on Memorial Day fires up the grilling season in South Carolina.

But no one wants their backyard barbecue to be a snooze fest, so here are the Top 10 things that will help to make your bash the best ever!

1. Set a time of when the fun starts and when it will end, after all you do have to work on Tuesday.

2. Plan the menu. Our poll at the bottom could help you decide what meat to throw on the grill.

3. Invite all of your cool friends who love a last-minute option as much as you do and ask them to bring a dish. Be sure to spread those dishes out between appetizers, salads, sides and desserts.

4. Look for recipes. Here are some fun options for a Memorial Day Party Foods from Mom.me. You can find others on Food Network, and don't forget those who prefer vegetarian options.

5. Music sets the mood for any festive affairTop 10 Memorial Day Songs recommended by Taste of Country. And yes, Lee Greenwood is on there! But if some of these are too heavy or if you are beginning to feel a little depressed, check out About.com's 100 Best Party Songs of All Time.

6. Use earth-friendly paper products for the party. This will allow you to spend more time with your guests and less time washing dishes. Most grocery stores carry at least one brand of these products.

7. Games. If you are opening the event up to the little people in your life or the lives of those you love, find ways to entertain them. Horeshoes, dodgeball, kickball, hide and seek, freeze tag or Simon Says will keep them entertained for hours or at least until the hot dogs are ready.

8. Chilling the drinks. Coolers are always too small for a party! Buy a cheap plastic kiddie pool, some ice and viola! It's the perfect place to ice down soft drinks, juice, Kool-Aid and adult beverages.

9. Decorate with Red, White and Blue. If you have to buy items, remember you can reuse them on the Fourth of July! had lots of items to choose from on Friday.

10. Plan for pests and heat. Let's face it folks we live in the south, where the state bird should be the mosquito and the sun will bake you to a crisp. Pack a basket with bug repellants, sunscreens and hand sanitizers.

Enjoy the party and time with friends and family!

Remember to vote in the poll below on your favorite item to throw on the grill!

Well deserved. She is an incredible dancer and a lovely young lady! Wish her all the best.

We love to go to the Highway 25 Drive-In in Greenwood. They have two screens showing 2 - 3 moviesRead More per night each and you can get a great burger or sandwich from their concession stand, too. It's a very family-oriented venue with a playground in front of the screen to keep the kids entertained before the movie starts.

Saw many movies at drive ins over the years. Cannot remember the first one or the last one, but, itRead More was always fun. One thing I loved about them was the fact you could bring your own concessions and save a lot of money. I also remember the playgrounds just about all of them had to keep the children entertained before the show started, during intermission and while waiting for the cars to get out. Only thing I did not enjoy going with my family, our dad always left before the end of the second feature, to beat the crowd. One movie I waited more than 30 years to see the end of it and had to stay up until 2 AM and be at work at 6 the next morning, lol. I miss those days. Thanks for letting me know the one on Highway 25 in Greenwood is open.

It will NEVER work right the way it is designed. How are you going to get your mouth in there to getRead More the last bit of the burger? Too much of the food is actually in the holder and there is seemingly no way to get past the little prongs on the sides to get you mouth in there. Remember, it takes two hands to handle a Whopper!
Jason Evans (Editor) June 3, 2013 at 03:29 pm
I was wondering about the last bit of the burger too, Sammy. Also, if the thing is supposed to letRead More you multi-task while you munch, how can you see what you're doing with a burger and big plastic thing dangling in front of your face?

there is no excuse for adultery. If your married first you should remain celibate until marriage.Read More Second you should not need porn with your spouse. Its about LOVE and RESPECT

When I find out that an actor/actress is gay, I no longer watch their programs. As a born againRead More Christian, I cannot (backed by the Bible in Romans chapter one) approve of that life style.

The mom says the child pushed her to work harder at her studies. Doesn't that count for something?Read More We had students who used them in their senior "memory" pages, but not in their school photo. But regardless of her choices as a teen, being a mom is a huge representation of the person you become and that she became as a result of having the child. How is that less significant than a football?

The School is right. Shame should never be celebrated
Shell Bell May 10, 2013 at 05:58 pm
Why is it shameful or a mistake? She made a bad decision that gave her the most precious gift aRead More human could receive, and she stepped up and raised this baby, and graduated! I was the youngest sister of 3 girls and my sister took me as her "prop" she was never ask who I was or anything the pic was used in the yearbook. Its is not shameful to show others that one bad decision doesn't have to lead to more! To me this could have been used to help encouraged other teen mom's, cause lets face it teen motherhood. Is an issue these days.

37 years ago, our daughter caught chicken pox at her day care. When I called to let them know, I wasRead More told, "Yes, it is going around, we have had several cases." One of the spots on her face got infected and a couple of weeks later meningitis put her into the hospital on her second birthday. Was there a conecction? We do not know, but if there had been a vaccine for CP then, it might have saved us that horrible experience.

I'm with you JackDaniel - this sounds like something designed to pad someone's pocket. If someoneRead More wants to learn CPR, they can find ways to do it. I took a CPR class many years ago where I worked, and I can guarantee you that if I had to do it now, whomever I was doing it on would be in trouble. The fact of the matter is that if you don't have a deep interest in retaining the skill, you're going to forget whatever it is you learned within a year or two, and unless you happen to beat the odds and find yourself in the whatever-hundred thousand to one situation where you would actually need to remember, it is going to be a complete waste of time. Bottom line - while it sounds like a noble goal, it's a big waste of time and a complete misuse of school time that should be spent on the three R's.

I just checked Sen Malloy's record and it appears that he is zero for 18 on getting bills passedRead More this session. He did get three resolutions passed so he is 3 for 22 overall. Maybe he needs to change his line of work. I am still looking for any connection to a company that sells medical/rescue equipment.
Sammy May 7, 2013 at 08:27 pm
Is the state going to give the classes free or are the parents going to be stuck paying the bill forRead More them Seems like a good idea on the surface, but, if CPR is not done right, it can kill the very person you are trying to save. Most people in an emergency situation, panic and do not do what they are supposed to do. Cool heads rarely prevail.
Ashley Adams May 9, 2013 at 06:01 pm
I don't think they should run background checks, but they should state up front that they don't andRead More advice their customers to do so. http://quickbackgroundsearch.com/

I think they should since all of the mentioned are out to make a buck, i.e. the dating sites, theRead More possible scam-er slash criminal and the back ground check service, more scams are going on these days and not just on the internet
denise May 6, 2013 at 03:04 pm
I think if the high school students passed all the required courses for graduation then theyRead More shouldn't have to take the exit exam but if the ones that are failing should have to take it and give them one last chance to earn their diploma.
Julia April 26, 2013 at 03:50 pm
Sounds a little weird that you would hold your kid over the sink so that they can go to theRead More bathroom. That doesn't sound very sanitary. It would be better if children would learn to associate toilets rather than sinks as the place to go potty!
Mary Grady April 27, 2013 at 07:57 pm
This is nonsense. It is someone's idea of how to assuage a belief that the parent has to be more inRead More a child's life or have greater control of a child's life rather than teaching the child to control their own lives. Frankly, the notion of allowing my toddler to run around like that is nauseating and I'd be visiting less if a friend was going this.
Emily April 27, 2013 at 11:47 pm
I was kinda sort of rased that way. When outside i was allowed to be naked. Inside I was properlyRead More "contained"
