Update: Arrest Made in Howard's Rock Vandalism

Original story updated with additional details.

An 18-year-old North Carolina man has been arrested in connection with the vandalism of Howard's Rock at Clemson University's Memorial Stadium earlier this month, according to Fox Carolina.

During a press conference held on campus Friday afternoon, Clemson University police said that Micah Rogers, of Pisgah Forest, N.C., is charged with malicious injury to real property and unlawful entry to enclosed places.

A witness identified Rogers as being at the scene, and Clemson Police Capt. Eric Hendricks said, "there is no doubt" they have the right man.

According to the Clemson Insider, Rogers turned himself in after seeing his truck, a Ford F-250, on surveillance video.  Rogers said he was camping with family in the Clemson area at the time the crime was committed.  However, he has not confessed to vandalizing the rock, WYFF reported.

The malicious injury count is a felony charge, according to a university release.

Rogers is not affiliated with the university, police said. However, Rogers' truck does sport a Clemson sticker and he owns Clemson memorabilia, police said.

Police have yet to recover the broken piece of the rock and the investigation is ongoing, officials said. More arrests are expected, police said.

Rubbing Howard's Rock before entering the stadium for home games has long been a Clemson Tiger football tradition.

Earlier this month, officials announced that part of the rock had been chipped off and its protective casing destroyed.

Last week, police released surveillance footage of a white truck arriving at and leaving the stadium. Rogers was also identified by a witness, police said.

Rogers has been released on a $5,470 personal recognizance bond.

While the desecration of the rock has struck at the heart of the Tiger nation, Jimmy Howard, the son of legendary football coach Frank Howard, for whom the rock is named, has taken the incident in stride.  He told WYFF he'd like the missing piece of the rock to be returned, but he has no hard feelings against the vandals.

"I heard they were Clemson fans.  They just wanted a piece of the rock," said Howard.

"On behalf of the athletic department and the football coaches and players, I want to thank the Clemson University Police Department, the State Law Enforcement Division and the Thirteenth Circuit Solicitor's Office for acting in a swift, thorough manner with regards to the vandalism to Howard's Rock," said Clemson Athletic Director Dan Radakovich. "We appreciate the efforts of everyone involved in this case."
