SCDOT to Replace Bridge Spanning Six Mile Creek With a Temporary Bridge

The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) is moving forward with plans to use a temporary bridge to replace the existing structure on Jones Mill Road over Six Mile Creek in Pickens County near Daniel High School.

The bridge was closed on the night of August 6, 2013 when heavy rains caused a partial collapse. Governor Haley signed an emergency declaration on August 9, 2013 that allowed SCDOT to request Emergency Relief Funds from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) on that same day. FHWA approved the request on August 12, 2013 and approved the use of a temporary bridge on August 27, 2013.

The temporary bridge is expected to be installed and the road re-opened by the end of October. At the same time, plans will be developed for a permanent replacement bridge. SCDOT will meet with several qualified contractors in the coming days to solicit bids for the removal of the damaged bridge and the installation of the temporary bridge.

SCDOT's plan includes leaving the temporary bridge in place until the end of the current school year so as not to disrupt access to Daniel High School once Jones Mill Road is re-opened. Construction of the new bridge is scheduled to begin next summer when the school year is complete.

The detour around this damaged bridge is 4.62 miles. The route is S-224 to SC 133 to S-291 back to SC-160 (Jones Mill Road). A map of this detour is attached.

• It is 120-feet long and consists of four 30-foot precast spans.
• The average daily traffic on Jones Mill Road is approximately 2100 vehicles.
