Relay for Life is Tonight

Area teams raising money to find a cure for cancer.

Iron Man and Superman are returning to screens this summer.

But some area superheroes are waging a fight far bigger and more important than the ones in any summer blockbluster and they need everyone's help to succeed.

Area teams are stepping up to raise the money that will be used to find a cure for cancer and every donation may be the donation that funds a cure.

The Pickens County Relay for Life kicks off tonight at 7pm at the Old Liberty High School Football Stadium, according to Elizabeth Tilley, Community Manager with the American Cancer Society.

Before this year's Relay kicks off at 7pm, a drop-in reception for cancer survivors and a guest will be held on the field from 5:30-6:30pm.

“It's a way to celebrate them with before the event starts,” Tilley said.

The Relay for Life will kick off with the survivors lap, followed by a lap for caretakers. Then teams will keep a walker on the track at all times until the event is over at 1am.

“We would love for the community to come out,” Tilley said. “You do not have to be a part of a team to come out and enjoy this. We invite all the community to come out and join us. We've got some games. We've got inflatables for kids, we've got a band. It's going to be just a really nice family-friendly evening.”

One of the most moving parts of the Relay for Life will take place shortly after sundown.

The Luminary Ceremony will take place around 9pm.

The track will be decorated with luminaries placed their in memory of family and friends.

“It's a wonderful way to remember those who have lost their battle with cancer and wrap our arms around those who are still battling,” Tilley said.

As the luminaries are lit, all movement on the track stops.

Luminaries will be available for purchase before the ceremony.

“People can make a donation in memory of their family and friends and add their luminaries to our ceremony,” Tilley said.

Teams will be fundraising through the evening.

“They'll be selling food, pastries, you name it,” Tilley said.

And the fundraising will continue when the Relay is over.

“We'll be raising money until the end of August, and then we start over for next year,” Tilley said.

A newcomer to Easley has joined the fight against cancer, she said.

“Sam's Club of Easley is our presenting sponsor this year,” Tilley said. “We are so excited about them. They're such a wonderful addition to the community. They'll be out there with their team. We are thrilled and excited to have them as partners in this fight.”
