Five things to do for Saturday, May 18

  Good morning, Easley, today is Saturday, May 18 and there are 227 days left in the year. There's lots to do today in Easley and the surrounding area. The first Foothills Arts Festival kicks at 10am and will run until 4pm in Old Market Square. The event is being held by the Arts Council of Pickens County, an organization that formed last year with the goal of celebrating and supporting local arts and artists. The festival will feature visual, performing, literary, culinary, and folk artists from around the upstate. Throughout the day, free entertainment occupies the Amphitheatre stage. Pickens Rec to Host Traditional Arts & Music Day Camp

TAM YAM Camp will feature instruction on traditional mountain music instruments and much more.

The fifth annual Traditional Arts & Music Day Camp for Young Appalachian Musicians (TAM YAM Camp) will be held July 15-19 at Pickens Recreation Center in Pickens. Pickens County BPW Young Careerist Named

Fallon Brucke wins Young Careerist Award

The Easley Business and Professional Women’s Organization (BPW) recently held nominations for the prestigious 2013 Pickens County BPW Young Careerist Award. To qualify, young careerist representatives must be between the ages of 21 and 35 and have been employed in business or professions with a minimum of one year of full-time work experience.        Participants had to submit an application and prepare a four (4) minute speech for the BPW local competition. The local BPW Young Careerist competition was held at the Captain Kimberly Hampton Memorial Library in Easley, SC. The winner of this prestigious award is Mrs. Fallon Brucke of Pickens. Art in the Garden is Saturday

Pickens' Hagood-Mauldin Arts hosts celebration of fine arts and historic crafts

The Hagood-Mauldin House and Irma Morris Museum of Fine Art in Pickens will host the fourth annual Art in the Garden Saturday. Organizer Marge Schaefer with the Pickens County Historical Society said this year's event will focus on fine arts and historic crafts. Art in the Garden will be held from 10am-4pm at the Hagood-Mauldin House, located at 104 N. Lewis Street in Pickens, behind Legacy Square. Artists will be displaying their work, including watercolors and oils, during the event. “Each artist will have their own tent,” Schaefer said. “We have several new artists this year.” She said crafts were added to Art in the Garden last year. Clemson University Offers Dozens of Summer Camps

Looking for a camp to send the kids this summer? Clemson has a huge range of options to choose from.

Clemson University has released its list of summer camps, and its a doozy. The university will be offering at least 36 different camps, many of them on campus, but also at sites throughout the Upstate and the rest of South Carolina. The camps, for children through high-schoolers, include a multitude of sports camps, camps aimed at the outdoors, and, of course, academic camps. Hagood Mill Celebrating Armed Forces Day May 18

Celebration will include unveiling of new State Historical Marker

Come join the friends of the Pickens County Museum as “Music in the Mountains 2013” continues with the Hagood Mill hosting a special “Armed Forces Day” concert on Saturday, May 18. This free event (donations appreciated) will feature a performance on the mill’s outdoor stage from 11:30 to 3:00 with the mill site’s great “house band,” Rocky Bottom Bluegrass, and SC Folk Heritage Award winning fiddler, multi-instrumentalist and entertainer, Nick Hallman. Nick and friends will do a variety of music, stories and fun (including a demonstration of mountain toys). Museum Offering Summer Sketchbook Class

Students will find inspiration for their sketches at the Hagood Mill.

The Pickens County Museum is pleased to announce registration is now open for three exciting new Summer Sketchbook Workshops to be held at the Hagood Mill Historic Site & Folklife Center (138 Hagood Mill Rd, Pickens, SC 29617).   Instructor for these workshops, Jo Johnston, worked as commercial artist for 30 years. A graduate of Orangeburg-Calhoun Tech, Jo has also taught drawing, watercolor, and acrylic painting at Johnston County Community Technical College. Art Workshop to Have Visual Impact

The Pickens County Museum of Art & History invites you to join Dale Cochran for his newest in a series of workshops, ““Visual Impact-Composition & Basic Perspective” on Saturday, June 8, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Museum’s Liz Smith-Cox Educational Studio. In this one-day workshop students will discover the impact of composition and learn the basics of perspective. Good composition is the foundation of any successful piece of art and in this workshop Dale will help you identify the visual elements that create a painting and demonstrate how to manipulate them for the greatest impact.
