Primary Results: Record Turnout Gives Newt Rout

Early projections show Gingrich defeats Romney

COLUMBIA — A record number of voters turned out for the South Carolina primary Saturday and delivered former House Speaker Newt Gingrich a blowout win that may restart the entire race.

Gingrich surged during the final week of the contest, overcoming a double-digit deficit to trounce former Mass. Gov. Mitt Romney. Gingrich earned 40 percent of the vote and won all but three counties.

"It is very humbling and very sobering to have so many people who so deeply want their country to get back on the right track," Gingrich said in his victory speech from Columbia.

Gingrich's debate performances separated him from the field, especially when he attacked the media on Thursday night in Charleston.

"It’s not that I am a good debater," he said. "It’s that I articulate the deepest felt values of the American people."

Romney, the presumptive nominee, earned only 28 percent of the vote in South Carolina, just days after learning that he didn't win in Iowa, either.

"This race is going to be even more interesting," Romney said during his concession speech from Columbia. "This is a hard fight because there's so much worth fighting for."

More than 595,000 people voted during the primary, which represents a new record. The previous high was 573,101 votes during the 2000 primary.

"It speaks volumes to how interested our party is in defeating Barack Obama," SCGOP Executive Director Matt Moore said of the turnout. "We've had record turnout at events, record spending on ads, record numbers of visits from candidates, so I’m not surprised that people slogged through the rain to get to the polls."

Turnout was consistently strong from Goose Creek to Easley and everywhere in between despite torrential downpours and tornado watches throughout much of the day.

Sen. Rick Santorum finished third in the Palmetto State with 17 percent support and Rep. Ron Paul finished fourth with 13 percent.

"Three states, three winners, what a great country," Santorum said in his speech from The Citadel in Charleston. "Let me assure you that we will go to Florida and Nevada and Colorado and Maine and everywhere else."

Paul, who improved his performance in South Carolina when compared to 2008, told his followers in Columbia that he was in for the long haul.

"This is the beginning of a long hard slog," Paul said. "The message of liberty is being received by more people every single day."

Exit polls show that Gingrich won among nearly every demographic, including women and independent voters. Gingrich also won with supporters of Gov. Nikki Haley, even though she endorsed Romney.

I love it! I hope Gingrich goes all the way and ultimately wins the Republican nomination. Go ahead and put the "divorce-my-wife-when-she's-dying, then-cheat-on-the-next-one" ethically corrupt hypocrite up against the President, who is the epitome of moral, family values. Oh yes, ye new fangled, Tea Party-led Republican party, we see your true colors.

BMW... you are spewing half-truths. Do you remember JFK??? Do you remember Teddy Kennedy and Chappaquidik? Do you remember John Edwards? I think there is enough hypocricy to go around here. Just ask yourself -- are you better off now than you were 4 years ago? I don't think so.

If we are going to vote for a candidate based totally on character, then Obama will definitely fail in this election. Problem is that the media won't even question him about his past or present. The truth is that I really don't care about a candidate's private life or past mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes. I care about a man's ability to own up to his mistakes and take responsibility for them. God is the only one who has the power to judge or forgive. I'm concerned about having a President who loves America and is smart enough to turn our country around. Newt can do the job.

PS. I give Newt's ex-wife even less credence as I did those bimbos who did Herman in. They all made themselves look bitter, petty, and vindictive.

I wonder how many Democrats came out to vote for Gingrich. I saw e-mails urging Dems to do so.
