Poll: Haley Daughter's Statehouse Job — Is It News?
Governor sites security reasons for challenging story.
After a long game of will they or won't they, The State and The Post and Courier each published reports on a new Statehouse job for Gov. Nikki Haley's daughter.
The State had been preparing a story on 14-year-old Rena Haley's gift shop position. When a draft was mistakenly published in the Rock Hill Herald, Haley took to her Facebook page to rail against the story.
"Scrutiny of me comes with the territory of being governor. I expect it. But it’s a sad day for journalism in South Carolina when The State newspaper goes after my 14 year old daughter. Public officials have a right to expect that their minor children are off limits from political opponents and even from biased media outlets like The State. Its disgusting. Shame on them."
No surprise to anyone, her rant sent political observers hunting for the story, but it had been pulled from online sites at the Herald and the Charlotte Observer. When The Post and Courier published a report Wednesday with details on Rena's job, The State finally went live with its story.
Is it newsworthy or is the governor right?

So, this is Haley's way of helping with the states unemployment, giving her 14 year old daughter a job at the state house instead of letting someone who actually needs a job have it.

Why do you think Haley's daughter does not need a job? How many people do you know in the Columbia are who would want to work that job? Jobs like that are great for teens, gives them experience they will need to get better paying jobs and weill teach them just how nasty a lot of people can be when you are waiting on them.

Nikki said she wanted the tax payers deciding how we wanted to spend our tax dollars. I DO NOT want her daughter getting our tax dollars. Nikki can pay her OWN daughter for doing chores around the house or the kid can babysit.

I can understand her not wanting reporters going after her daughter. However, Haley if you do not want that, do not put her in the situation that they would be questioning why? Was that job offered to any other 14 years olds? What kind of influence did Haley have in getting her daughter the jobf? Was the job ever advertised? These are the things the public want to know and has a right to know. Do no hush up the papers! Just do what is right and you would have nothing to worry about. Did you use your polictical position to get her the job and stop the story in the newspaper? If that was the case, then you have no business in office and any negative remarks are deserving. But, no matter what, your daughter should be protected from any retaliations resulting from your actions. You are the one resposible for your actions not her.

As I put on the Patch's Facebook page: Of course it is news. Even more so with her saying The State is going after her 14 year old daughter--is she that dumb? It is about her way of her office and influence being all about her and not about the people of South Carolina. Further, her attack dog spokesperson Rob Godfrey is a piece of work himself, considering his comments on the news report. Lemme see...She supports 2nd Amendment and other Constitiutional Amendments but not the First Amendment "Freedom of the Press"? Geeze, Louise!

The people of South Carolina are tired of "Why me"? Haley start cleaning yourself up! Stop using your position for you and your family to gain financially! Was this job that your daughter took advertised in the state? How many other 14 years olds were considered for the job. Seeing that most employers in this state will not even think about hiring a 14 years old. There are so many 16 years olds that do not work because they cannot find someone to hire them. How was this job offered to your daughter? Did she actively seek this employment, or was it thrown on her lap for the perfect opportunity? If the press was going to write about this, what stopped them? Was it a threat from the Haley's office? If you do the right thing, stop trying to put you and your family into situations that the general public want to know how you are getting away with the things you are doing while in office. Then you would have nothing to worry about. But until then, we the people have the right to know where our tax dollars are going. Why they are going there. And WHAT IS OUR GOVENOR DOING FOR THE PEOPLE OF SOUTH CAROLINA? Reguardless of what you do, your daughter should be protected from the press. You are the one responsible for any mess that you may have created. Not her! Hope you hear what the people are saying. Because YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

NO -- this is not news. We need to concentrate on Haley's lack of support for Public Schools and the Charleston Harbor!!!

The qualifications of public employees have always been an issue the press could write about. Once Ms. Haley took that job she became a public employee, not simply the governor's minor daughter. Given Gov. Haley's political stance, I would assume her daughter's position was not established as a new position, does not receive very much money, and does not have any involvement in collective bargaining. If she were hired on merit, as the best qualified person to fill an existing vacancy, then there really is no issue. Otherwise...

We should care about this. Are we going to teach our children that it is okay to name throw and pull strings of the people we know to get ahead? Shouldn't we be teaching them proper work ethics? That if you want a job, you prepare for it, learn about the position, company, and they apply? That with hard work and determination you can become a production member of society? Not to depend on others to do it for you, but to stand tall and know that they did it themselves. This builds up self cofident, self esteem, and pushes them to want to pursue their dreams. Teach your children the right way. Do not screw them up for life!

No experience? He was on a gov't career path his entire adult life. He served 12 years as an elected official before he won the presidency.

How is it Gretchen that in damn near every post you make some reasonable person comes behind you and proves you wrong. How can you just be wrong all the time? Does it bother you?
If everything I ever said lay between completely ignorant and a calculated lie it would bother me.

No this is not Haley bashing! The fact of the matter is that Haley is in a position to set the example to the people. What kind of message is she putting out? Not good. Do you as a tax payer get outraged when someone in politics creates a position for a know associate to fill, with out any background in that position? I do. How about the other employees in goverment who work hard every day with the hopes of moving up, only to find the funds that should of been going to raises and benifits were used to create this job for someone that she knew. I think it is wrong and that if created it should be offered to the most qualified person and not to some one just because they have political ties. She is suppose to set a high ethics scale to all the people of South Carolina. She is failing to do that. She was voted into office by the people with the beleif that she would hold high ethics and do the best for the interest of the people of South Carolina. So far she has only should an interest in her and her family's financial gain! I'm dissappointed. Especially when it's on my tax dollar!

WRONG !!!!!
Commissioner Clyburn has a long history of public service and dedication to the public interest. Prior to her swearing in as Commissioner, Ms. Clyburn served for 11 years as the representative of South Carolina's sixth district on the Public Service Commission of South Carolina (PSC). She was sworn in for her first term in July 1998, and was subsequently REELECTED in 2002 and 2006. She served as chair of the PSC from July 2002 through June 2004.

I'll consider this issue seriously when the P & C follows up with a story about all state officials who have used the influence of their offices to get their kids summer jobs. Until then, looks like just more Haley bashing.

It's a job in a gift shop for crying out loud. Any reasonable parent would do the same. It's not like the governor appointed her to run the treasury. I will do anything in my power to help my kids get a job (as long as its legal). Wouldn't you?
