Haley on Voter ID: 'We won't let this go'
Implementing South Carolina's new Voter ID law before November elections looks like a long shot.
A new South Carolina Voter ID law looks increasingly like a long shot to affect the November general election.
The law, praised by S.C. Republicans as one of the top new pieces of legislation in the 2012 State House, was shot down by the justice department again on Monday.
And on Tuesday, a lawsuit filed by South Carolina against the U.S. government received a new timetable.
Gov. Nikki Haley, a strong supporter of the new law, took to Facebook Tuesday and vowed to keep fighting: "We won't let this go."
Following the DOJ objection to the law last December, S.C. Attorney General Alan Wilson vowed to file suit over it. That lawsuit was filed on Feb. 7.
The state Election Commission tells AP it would need about two months to implement the law.

Of course the republicans are not going to let it go, they will do anything to discourage the poor from voting since so many of them vote Democrat.

The only reason someone would risk our country's welfare to undocumented person's unwilling to show a ID, is simply because they fear obama only has a change at re-election with fraudulent votes from undocumented, dead, or ineligible voters. I have to show my ID every time I vote and I am more a natural citizen than our own president. Why should Pasquel and Raoul and Shequandra and Dante' have to show theirs?

Yeah, Wade - you have to show an ID. Which can be any form of ID - student ID, voter registration card.... SCGOP wants to alienate 15 percent of the voters in this state who don't the specific type of ID they want the law to call for. For example, seniors are not required to renew their IDs as long as they're not driving. Banks and even courts have to take their IDs as valid, too. But now Haley and GOPbots want to take away their rights to vote. Because they think the less voters there are, the better the chances they can stay in office to continue sinking this state in the cesspool. There have been NO fraudulent votes - and you know you can't prove it. So that's why you have no other choice but to resort to racism in your comments....

Ken, I am poor too but the handwriting is on the wall so that all that can read and think beyond the silly arguments like yours that this nation is in trouble and we need the safeguard of having ID at the voter booth to hopefully avoid having voter fraud. Did it trouble you when the "black panther" stood outside the voting precinct waving his billy jack? Would you prefer his voter dictatorship instead?

tops on 2012 SC legislation...where did jobs programs and quality education for all rank...or have there been any legislation to create jobs and improve education...

You need to work on something worthwhile GOVERNOR!! Maybe PUBLIC EDUCATION! I understand that proponents of strict photo ID rules argue that they are needed to protect the integrity of elections and prevent voter fraud. But these arguments do a disservice to the American people by confusing unrelated issues; voter impersonation fraud is virtually nonexistent, and the examples of fraud that proponents can point to are not situations that could be prevented by photo ID requirements. Instead, strict ID rules create new obstacles for the millions of Americans who do not have acceptable ID; obstacles that fall hardest on elderly, low-income, and minority voters. We want to make sure as many voters that can LEGALLY vote have that opportunity. Let's spend time on a REAL issue -- improving our Public Schools that have languished in the bottom of all states for the past 10 years of Republican leadership, or lack thereof....

Spending money on education would decrease the amount of low wage laborers available in the state, and low wage labor is required for the jobs the Governor is so proud to be bringing into the state. In a couple of decades we can be like China!

The US already outspends every country in the world in education in total dollars and in dollars per student. We only perform average at best in reading, math and science and many countries who spend half of what we spend per student outperform us in some categories. What makes you think throwing more money at education will improve our society or our citizens? Maybe it's not how much we are spending but the way we are spending it?

@ John, what do you mean "more? If you mean as a % of GDP, which is how we compare normally from country to country, then no, the US doesn't even spend in the top 25. Your link says it "compares the United States’ education spend and performance versus eleven countries". Cherry picking eleven countries that spend less than America is pretty easy to do.
I agree, spending more efficiently is always a goal we should strive for, but "starving the beast" only hurts the poor. Why do you think keeping spending as low as it is or even worse as implied by your answer that defunding education will improve our society or citizens?

When obstacles are thrown in your way, you learn how to overcome them (or go around) but keep your eyes on the goal! If the ID law is passed, the good news is obtaining an Identification card from the DMV is free of charge. (just a little wait time).
We must not be destracted with the pettiness of this election year but make sure that we and (everyone else we know) has their id card ready and their morals intact because the way this state gong, id cards are the least of our worries!!!!

and irony of irony: Arizona, Georgia, New Hampshire, SOUTH CAROLINA and Utah — have passed laws prohibiting compliance with Real ID (2005 law)
even tho nothing to do with non existence voter fraud at the ballot box...had SC implemented Real ID (2005 law) vice opposing...all would have IDs...
can there be any doubt the current voterID law is only to suppress BO voters...

So all the elderly voters - who by law do not need new IDs unless they are driving a vehicle, and who can continue to use their IDs even if expired as valid ID in banks and courtrooms - are suddenly going to have to stand in line to get new ones? Disabled folks who don't drive - they have to go to DMV for an ID? And since there's no law that says anyone has to carry a picture ID on them (when asked by police for ID, you're only required to state your name), you want a stricter law for voters? Even though voters had to show some type of ID when they first register to vote (or, if they register to vote by mail, have to show valid picture ID when they first vote)? How much more like North Korea and China do you want the United States to become?

round and round the voterID bush...can someone explain how a person could commit voter fraud at the ballot box under current laws...ie;
1. you register and your name is on the voter registration roster.
[clip fr application] 'Social Security Number is required by the S.C. Code of Laws 7-5-170. This number is used for internal purposes only and eliminates multiple registrations by a single individual. Your Social Security Number is not released to any unauthorized individual.' [end clip]
2. at the polling location the election official checks your name off the list and gives you a ballot.
it is the job of an election official to ensure the roster is current...ie/eg dead people are removed.

Nikki Haley is as phony as Jim DeMint and Joe Wilson. She is for "right to work" but then she protects Henry McMaster and Rick Quinn when these two crooks used the shield of SC to attack me using their manufactured lies and RAPED me and revoked my securities license as if they had any basis to do so. Maybe she will soon go to Argentina and hopefully will never make it back
