Easley Prepares for the 2011 Big League World Series

In just 11 days teams and fans from around the world will descend on Easley for a week of baseball and entertainment.

In just 11 more days, nine baseball teams from all over the world will descend on Easley for the biggest event in Little League- the Big League World Series.

This year the city of Easley is host to the international event for the eleventh year in a row. The Big League World Series is a division of the non-profit organization Little League International, which has selected Easley to host the world-wide event, said BLWS Director Jon Humphrey.

"We have 11 teams that come from around the world- five U.S. teams that go through regional tournaments, five international teams, and then our local South Carolina District One team," Humphrey told the Easley City Council last Monday night.

The event kicks off with Fan Fest on July 26 with a series of three concerts for the fans. This year's acts will include the band All Time Low, Iyaz, and Cody Simpson. The baseball tournament begins on July 27 and games will be played daily until the day of the championship game on Aug. 3. ESPN will provide live coverage of the final game.

Fans worldwide will also be able to stream live coverage of all the games through the Youth Sports Live website.

"We're still using the J.B. 'Red' Owens Complex, it's a great complex," Humphrey said. "You couldn't ask for a better venue with the two fields right next to each other."

One thing is for certain, Easley will be in the world-wide spotlight for eight days.

On the ground, the Easley business community is looking forward to the crowds of visitors who will be in attendance for not just the baseball games, but also the local shopping.

"This event has a large economic impact on the city of Easley," Greater Easley Chamber of Commerce President Kent Dykes said. "Spectators and players don't just spend time in Easley, they also spend money on souvenirs and other shopping here in the city."

The local business community, churches, and civic organizations are all a huge part of what makes the event possible according to Dykes.

"Our chamber members, churches, and organizations work to coordinate nine meals for 250 players," Dykes said.

Each night a different Easley business or organization will feed the players a healthy, balanced meal.

The Easley Rotary Club, Applebees Restaurant, Glenwood Baptist Church, First Baptist Church, Rock Springs Baptist Church, Enon Baptist Church, Outback Steakhouse, Easley Baptist Hospital, and Flat Rock Baptist Church will each participate in feeding the players during their stay in Easley.

Dykes said he looks forward to the event every year and plans to be there to represent the Easley Chamber of Commerce and to enjoy some baseball.

"I'll be at the tent for a little while each night and then I'm heading to the games," Dykes said.
