Amid High Gas Prices, BI-LO Expands Fuelperks Program

Grocer says items added to program could help drivers save as much as 50 cents per gallon.

With gas prices climbing for 33 straight days to a four-month high, BI-LO said it is adding more grocery items as part of its fuelperks! rewards program.

The expanded program includes hundreds of additional grocery items that will help the grocery chain’s BonusCard customers rack up from 5 to 50 cents per gallon per item, the Mauldin-based grocer announced.

For every $50 in qualified purchases a shopper spends at Bi-Lo, they receive a 5-cents-per-gallon reward applied to their Bi-Lo BonusCard that can be used at the pump to reduce the price of gas.

With the expanded benefits, a customer, for instance, who spends $50 on groceries in one trip automatically earns 5 cents per gallon with the standard fuelperks! rewards offer. If the customer, within their $50 total, also purchased two bonus rewards items worth 5 cents and two bonus reward items at 10 cents per gallon, then the potential fuelperks! rewards from the trip could equal 35 cents — instead of 5 cents — per gallon off their next fuel purchase at participating gas stations.

Publix Shopper

Publix is the much better store for an awesome shopping experience if you live in the south. My wife, after having surgery, asked for light bagging. The person working the register said they had to put at least so many items per bag and refused to accommodate her in spite of the fact it would have only taken 2 extra plastic bags. We have been loyal to Publix ever since.

I love Publix, too. Absolutely the best subs around. But the Fuelperks program does sound like a good deal for Bi-Lo shoppers. For those who don't know, Spinx stations also have a rewards program that reduces your per-gallon gasoline costs.

Bi-lo charge more upfront to give you 5-50 cents off. Plus the selected gas station you go to have more ethanol in gas so you ruin your car too. Buyer's beware of this trick.

I don't agree with these comments at all... loyal Bi-Lo Customer for years now... they have fuel perks, which are nice, and they also have a coupon policy that is by far better than any other store's.

With the price of gas, I think people just shop at the nearest grocery store that they live closest to, unless they want a specific item from a certain store. I shop at Bi-Lo.

My family generally breaks our monthly shopping up based on prices. We buy some items at Bi-Lo, some at Publix and some at Walmart and some at Target. My wife feeds a family of four for about $350 / month. The Bi-Lo and Publix are very close to the house so that helps of course. The other two she just make the trip while running other errands. She coupons a good bit and knows where to find the lowest price on items - like milk, peanut butter etc. For me, I actually think Publix is the best grocery store around, but you generally pay a little more for much of their goods. The flip side of that is their goods are often top quality. We don't even buy fruits and veggies at Walmart any more. They are bad after 2 or 3 days.

Anyway, good for BiLo for expanding Fuel Perks. For people who are utilizing these kind of programs this is great.
